The rapid growth of esports on a global scale has generated new areas of discussion not only within the digital gaming industry but also in the fields of sport management, media, economics, law, and international governance. In particular, the influential role of game publishers in governance, the emergence of international federations, the growing interest of the Olympic Movement in esports, and the increasing involvement of traditional sports clubs in the esports sector demonstrate that the institutional structure of this field is becoming increasingly complex. In Türkiye, a distinctive development process has taken place, extending from internet café culture to professional leagues and from the involvement of traditional sports clubs to the establishment of federative structures. This chapter examines the conceptual framework of esports, its historical development worldwide, international governance structures, and the institutionalization process in Türkiye from a historical and organizational perspective.
