Effects Of Seismic Base Isolation And Energy Damping Systems On Architectural Design

Seismic base isolation systems, which can be defined as controlling the seismic effects acting on the structures in the traditional design of energy damping systems and then isolating the seismic effects from the structures to a large extent by isconnecting the structures from the ground, have been used in some earthquake-active countries for some time, but for Türkiye it was seen as a utopic seismic design method until very recently. With the obligation imposed for hospital buildings above a certain size with a circular issued about ten years ago, many buildings designed for different purposes have been built in the last ten years, as well as many city hospital buildings, and are still being built. As a result, although modern seismic design methods are not widespread enough in Türkiye for the time being, they have reached a level that is not to be underestimated when compared to the countries that first addressed this issue, but the architectural design requirements specific to these modern methods are not well known by the architectural circles and the projects are mostly designed by design offices abroad. Although my first scientific contact with this subject dates back many years, my academic and practical studies in this context continued mostly in the form of adaptation of energy damping systems to traditional seismic design in existing buildings until recently due to the fact that it was an expensive method at that time, but today, especially the widespread use of base seismic isolation systems, The fact that the subject has not yet found a place in architectural education and the fact that I have seen that there is a lack of this issue in architectural circles has led me to research this subject again but in terms of architectural design requirements, As a civil engineer and at the same time as an academician with a history of approximately 36 years in architectural education, I decided to research the effects of modern seismic isolationsystems on architectural design and took a step for the formation of this book in your hand and decided to have a undergraduate study in the context of examining and evaluating the subject in terms of architectural design.
