THE DIGITAL ECONOMYConcepts, Markets, and Policy

THE DIGITAL ECONOMYConcepts, Markets, and Policy

This book began as a set of lecture notes. I started teaching ECON327 Digital Economy at Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University in the autumn semester of 2022-2023, and I soon encountered a difficulty that many colleagues in Türkiye will recognise. The available textbooks were excellent, but they had been written for other places. Their examples came from the United States and Western Europe. Their institutional background was the American antitrust tradition or the European single market, and their data described economies whose digital infrastructure, market structure and regulatory history differ from ours in ways that matter analytically. Students could learn the models, yet the models remained at a distance from the markets those students used every day. The notes prepared for that course were an attempt to close this distance. They grew each year, absorbed material from ECON405 Industrial Organization, which I have taught in English since the autumn semester of 2021-2022, and eventually outgrew the format of a course pack. The present book is the result.
