The discipline of physical education, traditionally thought to focus solely on the development of physical skills, is today evolving into a holistic educational approach that centers on the individual’s social and emotional competencies. This transformation encompasses not only the development of motor skills but also students’ ability to manage their emotions, develop effective communication skills, and cultivate empathy. In today’s educational philosophy, the goal is shifting toward nurturing well-rounded individuals. In this context, physical education classes provide a holistic educational environment by integrating psychomotor, cognitive, and affective development through movement-based activities inherent to the discipline. This environment contributes to students’ adoption of moral values and the development of sportsmanship. Furthermore, physical education classes can contribute to the development of social and emotional skills such as social interaction, self-management, self-awareness, and empathy. In this regard, it serves as a crucial learning arena that supports students in better understanding both themselves and their surroundings, coping with challenges they face, and making healthy decisions. In addition to academic development, it offers important opportunities in terms of preparation for social life and holistic individual development. These opportunities demonstrate thatphysical education classes are a key area for the development of social-emotional learning (SEL) skills.
